| This
past Sunday began as a day like any other in Immokalee…almost…
except that this day was slated for the celebration
of the Year of the Worker. So instead of flooding
the streets in the twighlight of morning in the
daily search for work, workers from every corner
of town filled the street in front of the CIW
headquarters for what has become a yearly tradition
in Immokalee… This year’s crowd was
the biggest ever (the photo here, shows only half
of the crowd!).
|
Maybe
they came out to see Fernando Arau, host of
Despierta America, who -- always a crowd favorite
-- joined the Year of the Worker party for the
7th time!
|
Or
they might have come to enjoy the first ever
visit to Immokalee by Don Francisco, the much
loved host of Sabado Gigante and Don Francisco
Presenta. Don Francisco entertained the crowd
with a couple of songs and encouraged them to
stand up for their rights and to participate
in this years’ Taco Bell Truth Tour.
|
But
why aren't these guys laughing?
|
It
must be because there was some serious business
going on... as preparing for the Taco Bell Truth
Tour was indeed a main theme of the day. Amongst
the fun and festivities, the CIW Organizing
Committee took down names of those signing up
for the tour and announced the “With These
Hands” documentation project. (More on
this exciting development soon!)
|
 From
the look of things, the Immokalee community is
pumped and ready to hit to road to bring the truth
of what’s behind Taco Bell’s profits
to Yum Brands HQ in Louisville, KY. |
But
back to the entertainment.... There also seemed
to be a bit of funny business from Galactin
the clown...
|
 First
with some of the younger and more courageous members
of the crowd… |
 Even
the adults couldn't escape some old-fashioned
clowning around. |

Muusic from Grupo Signo rounded out the day...
|
As
the crowd remained steadfast.
|
When
all was said and done, the songs sung, and the
jokes made, Immokalee took care of business
by honoring the hardworking men and women who
labor everyday of the year to bring fresh produce
to our grocery aisles, our fast food chains,
and our families' tables.
