Bishop's Letter to the Coalition
of Immokalee Workers
January 17, 1998
Dear Members of the Coalition,
With deep concern for their health, I encourage Samuel Mar,
Abundio Rios and Antonio Ramos to end their hunger strike. Through
their courageous commitment to fast, these three men, along with
Domingo Jacinto, Roberto Acevedo and Pedro Lopez, have brought
national attention to the situation of farmworkers.
I am troubled by the deteriorating physical condition of the
men as they mark the 29th day of their hunger strike. As their
friend and supporter and for the sake of their well-being and
that of their families, I hope they will consider ending their
fast.
Their efforts have been fruitful. The national attention to
their cause as well as the support from the local community is
acknowledgment of the justice in their fight for beter wages.
They have raised the consciousness of people nationwide and hopefully
this interest will bring about positive changes for farmworkers.
I praise all those who are participating in the Chain of Solidarity
either by fasting or by prayer. I will continue to pray for a
reconciliation between workers and growers and a fair and just
resolution to the current impasse.
I will be celebrating Mass for the intentions of the workers
tommorrow evening, Sunday, January 18, at 6 p.m. at St Ann Church
in Naples. I hope they will join me.

Sincerely in Our Lord,
John J. Nevins, D.D.
Bishop of Venice in Florida
